The little shelter on top of it

The Youth Center “Happen”, in the R-Nord building, is one of the places where the youngsters of “Antenne” project are doing volunteer work. The project, that started in autumn 2021, offers accommodations with a discount on the rent to boys and girls from 18 to 34 years old in exchange for 30 hours of volunteering per month. Dimi Kazak, who is an “antenna installer” (as the participants of Antenne ironically call themselves), interviwed and photographed four of his mates.

The Youth Center “Happen” is a space where many associations and informal groups meet and it is open for free time every monday and friday afternoon. When the social cooperative Aliante was choosen by Municipality of Modena in 2020 to manage the center, suddenly the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions begun, and only in recent times some of the activities have been allowed.

Here, it is possible to meet different teenagers and youngsters from the neighborhoods Sacca and Crocetta: somebody is looking for a quiet place to study, others just want to play together, to record a new episode of the podcast called “Il cubo”, or to work out and dance. Their constant presence means that they want to stay together, interact and create new relationships.

“Happen” is also attended by the volunteers of “Antenne” project. They support the activities of the center with new ideas and their experiences. Among them, we find Federico, who has been living in the R-Nord building since last October. The interview with him, due to lots of artistic projects with other young dancers of the area, it is literally a river in flood. He talks about his activities and how this little shelter has been good for him. Thanks to this place, he has been able to do some work out and get through these moments of the pandemia, a difficult time mostly for the yougest.

Among the working students of “Antenne” project there is a little group that takes part in almost all the activities of the youth center: they are the international students. Afshan is native of Pakistan and she is attending the Master of Geosciences, Georisks and Georesources at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She is about to graduate and she hopes to find a job that let her have some free time and do charity work. She lives with Hassan who was born in Mumbai and moved here in order to study: at this point he is already graduated in economics and now he is working at McDonald’s. They knew each other in the student residence thanks to a friend, Azeem. He has finished the master of economics as well and, at the moment, he is providing financial advices, while he is working as a rider in the evening.

I asked them how much could be difficult to observe Ramadan during work, study and volunteering. They told me that sometimes it could be hard but, unexpectedly, they can confirm the importance of living in a quiet place. That is not a small matter.
